On vaikea kuvata lyhyesti mitä teen työkseni.
Työskentelen osan ajastani matematiikan didaktiikan yliopisto-opettajana
Kasvatustieteiden tiedekunnassa, suunnilleen yhtä suuren osan
luokanopettajakoulutusten harjoittelukoordinaattorina. Osan ajastani
työskentelen erilaisissa koulutusvientihankkeissa etupäässä Armenian Valtion
Pedagogisessa Yliopistossa ja osan ajastani käytän yliopiston yhteisten
asioiden hoitamiseen johtamalla koulutusneuvoston alaista Opintojen aloitus
-strategiahanketta, nyt neljättä vuotta. Tällä hetkellä hankkeen puitteissa
johdan tenttiakvaariotyöryhmää.
Toimin jäsenenä Oulun yliopiston
koulutusneuvostossa, Kasvatustieteiden tiedekunnan tiedekuntaneuvostossa ja
luokanopettajakoulutusten koulutusohjelmatoimikunnassa. Tärkeänä tehtävänäni
pidän kaikkien sidosryhmien kuuntelemisen eri elimissä toimiessani. Joskus on
tietenkin pakko tehdä ja ehdottaa kompromisseja, jotka eivät ole lopulta
kenenkään mieleen, mutta hyväksi yhteiselle asialle. Minusta on kuitenkin
parempi, että päätökset tehdään, eikä niitä venytetä ja näin aiheuteta
epätietoisuutta henkilökunnalle ja opiskelijoille.
Toimin aktiivisesti myös
ammattiyhdistystoiminnassa. Toimin parhaillaan OAJ Pohjois-Pohjanmaan
alueyhdistyksen varapuheenjohtajana, Yliopistojen opetusalan liiton hallituksen
jäsenenä ja OAJ:n valtuutettuna. Nämä tehtävät ovat auttaneet minua näkemään
yliopisto-opetusta ja tutkimusta laajemmasta perspektiivistä ja tarkastelemaan
oman yliopistomme toimintaa koko yliopistokentässä.
Avoin ja keskusteleva päätöksenteko on meidän
kaikkien yhteinen asia. Jos se ei synny muuten, tarvitaan pilliin puhaltajia.
Eri hallintoelinten päätöksistä pitää keskustella, minun tapauksessani erityisesti
opettajien ja tutkijoiden kanssa. Päätösten pitää jo valmisteluvaiheessa olla
avoimia ja julkisia, kuten julkisuuslakikin vaatii. Asioiden salailu ja salassa
valmistelu aiheuttaa yliopistoyhteisöön turhaa epäluuloa ja siksi aion tuoda
valituksi tultuani eri elimiin lisää julkisuuskulttuuria.

It is hard to describe in short what I do for
my day job. Part of my time I work as a university teacher teaching mathematics
education in the Faculty of Education.
About as much I work as a practice coordinator in the primary teacher
education. Part of my working hours I use in different international projects
mainly in the Armenian State Pedagogical University. The rest I use by leading
a strategy group under the Educational Council called The Starting of the
Studies. This I have done for four years now. In this project at this moment I
am leading the ”Exam Aquarium” group which plans a new way of making exams.
I am an active member of the Educational Council
of University of Oulu, the Educational Faculty Council and the Primary
Education Disciplinary Board. In these groups I think my most important mission
is to listen to all the stakeholders.
Sometimes we have to make compromises which in the end are seem not to
be good for anyone but at the same time are good for the common cause. I have
always thought that the decisions are made in timely manner because the longer
they take the more uncertainty they cause for the students and the personnel.
I actively work also in the Union. I am a vice
chair of the OAJ Pohjois-Pohjanmaan alueyhdistys (local branch of OAJ), a
member of the executive board of the Union for University Teachers and
Researchers in Finland (YLL) and a councillor in the Trade Union of Education
in Finland (OAJ) Council. These places have given me the opportunity to see the
university teaching and research from a wider perspective and our universty in
the whole university field in Finland.
Open and discussive administration must be our
common goal. If it is not born otherwise we need whistleblowers. Different
decisions must be discussed, in my case, especially with the teachers and
researchers. The decisions must be open already in the preparatory phase as
also the law requires. Keeping matters secret and planning them in hidden dark
places causes only suspicion. That is why I plan to bring with me a culture of
openness to the administrative
organs I am elected.
For my final words I would like to refer to a
comment of my persona from the Academic Officer of the Oulu University Union
Annakaisa Tikkinen: ”We have tried to root the motto 'Administration is fun'.
You are a living image of this slogan.”
